Breathing
Our breathing is more than just staying alive. Conscious breathing can be used to generally improve our ‘life force’. Just focussing on the breath can distract us from worrying thoughts. The rhythm aids the ability to focus on it. We can add a thought of our own choosing to the breath, such as, ‘I breathe in the new’. “I breathe out the old stories”. Or, “I breathe in new energy”, “I breathe out old tired energy’. It can be imagined in various ways. “I breathe in light”, “I breathe out light” in this way letting light flow from us. We can use this if we feel we want to give some light to the confused world!
Mindfulness
Another level is to step back from the way we perceive the world and see if we can turn around and see the situation in a more positive light. Our attitude reflects the way we think about things. As we change the way we think we change our attitude and in turn the way we perceive the world. As we we are able to shift our attitude we also may shift all aspects of our being. The stress level reduces and in turn there is less residual physical inflammation. Our body systems work better and our health, all things being equal may improve.
Mindfulness is a useful tool. It empowers us to control the ‘monkey mind’ that flits from thought to thought. In Self discovery the aim is to be able from time to time to observe the thoughts. The mind is only a part of our consciousness. The art of mindfulness is to be able from time to time be aware of what the mind is thinking. That is to be ‘aware’ from an other point of view. To do this we need to relax and become quiet, which for many is a challenge, then to ‘notice’ what the mind is thinking. There is no judgement, we simply observe.
Usually a person will have pretty average thoughts and this average is the way we see and react to situations around us. In this way our thoughts are creating our experiences and thus our reality. The art is to shift the ‘unhelpful’ thoughts and reshape them so that they are helpful. For example to become less judgemental of others, that is to understand they are doing the best they can, given all the background they have. Another example is to become less judgemental of ourself. To stop ‘beating ourselves up’ and understand that many of our reactions come from past conditioning and the old ‘stories’ that we carry with us.
Mantra Meditation
Meditation, specifically Mantra Meditation, uses a simple neutral mantra to add to the rhythm of the breathing. This also begins to create a mind control that creates some space in our thinking. It is in the mental stillness that we can go deeper into ourself. The key to Mantra Meditation is the breathing and adding to the breathing a simple mantra. There are many mantras that can be used, usually the simpler the better. One universal mantra is ‘So ‘ham’. It is pronounced ‘so – hum’. It sounds similar to the breathing. In Sanskrit is means, ‘I am that’, and is centred around the words ‘I am’. In many cultures the word ‘I am’ has a deep meaning of unity, as all people can say it, it is not exclusive. And of course ‘That” is everything else, this simply confirms the unity of all.
The procedure is to be comfortable. Many find sitting on the floor less stressful on the heart, assuming a reasonable upright posture, closing the eyes and think ‘So’ on the ‘in’ breath and ‘hum’ on the out breath. That is all it is. The purpose is to begin to quieten the flow of thoughts and to create moments of inner stillness. Just moments are sufficient to begin to allow a deeper awareness to appear as the ‘monkey mind’ of thoughts slows down.
Affirmations
There are two ways in which to see the purpose of affirmations. Both are helpful. The first is that these short statements redirect the part of our mind that programs our life experiences, responses and reactions. In time these sink into our life’s program.
The other is that these short statements actually reflect the true nature of who we really are. So the repetition slowly peels away the layers of conditioning that have dampened our creative loving self. Regardless of how we see them they are tools to our awakening. There are some very basic affirmations that can be repeated.
“I am healthy, I am wealthy, I am happy and I am wise.” A very basic whole of life affirmation. It may not reflect your present situation but it begins to put ideas in place for the future path.
” I am confident, I am capable, I am successful” likewise begins the process of self establishment.
These two examples should be said quite lightly and frequently. We do not try too hard. We have to let it work quietly in the background until we find we have shifted. We have changed the way we perceive our existence. We also need to add these into our mindfulness and our meditation for they will not work in an isolated situation, they are part of our self discovery
Mind
The mind is our thought tool
The mind is the tool, and it is so powerful that it is producing all of these things that are part of our life.
It is not really relevant whether it is a negative or positive thought but as it is creative, then we want to produce the best possible outcome for ourself and creation
Unfortunately we can feel powerless. But these thoughts are creating our part of the universe all the time, every second. Every thought we have is an energy of creation. Many of the thoughts we think we are not even aware of! We may or may not believe this, it doesn't matter, it happens anyway!
There is another mechanism that is part of our mind and that is often called the gate keeper. The gate keeper has a special function and that is to allow only the thoughts that fit into our ‘story’ to pass into our consciousness.
To some extent we can allow new thoughts to arise. This can be called being open minded. Even so the thoughts will still be restricted so they do not up-end our story.
If we can accept this or even part of it we give ourselves power to make changes, So why not think of ourself as a power-house of creative love. Thoughts come from deep within us and are shaped by how we see ourselves and how we respond to our world. This is our attitude, so it governs the way we think. It it is a circle but it can be a spiral to better things. In other words we can change the way we think, change the world.
Our thoughts are creating our reality even now!
Old Stories shape our Attitude
It is time to change
Our mind is amazing. It is constantly creating the thoughts that form our reality. Not only do these thoughts come from our mind, they come from our spirit and body as well.
In other words to change the way we think, we change the world.
Be Here Now - there is no where else!
A lot of life energy is lost maintaining past pointless memories or over preparing for a future that never eventuates. This loss of energy may affect our health and deplete the body's energy. In simple terms stress keeps the 'fight or flight' response active. From our 'cradle' we have been shaped, by family, peers and culture. We have stored many experiences many of which may have been less than helpful. They create layers over our happy self. And of course it depends on how we interpret these experiences. Some can simply shrug them off, whilst for others they are devastating. No two people are the same.
The present moment is a new moment. There is no need to drag the sack of memories behind us, but many unhelpful memories are old friends that we feel comfortable with. Many experiences are 'old movies' we like to watch to wallow in.
Many of our standard responses to situations are old responses that we simply revert to. But it does not have to be this way. To be 'here and now' we do have to practise our mindfulness and mantra meditation. It is from these that we generate the strength to begin to let these 'old stories' dissipate. It is not a quick process for we are building new responses and new attitudes. In the 'now' is our power to change.
